Fed Cuts Rates

The Federal Reserve cut its key interest rate by 0.25 percentage points to 4.00%-4.25% amid labor market concerns, marking the first reduction since December 2024.

Fed Chair Jerome Powell signaled potential further cuts in October and December, responding to rising unemployment risks, particularly among minorities. One policymaker preferred a larger 0.50 percentage point cut due to weak job creation. Despite the rate cut, inflation remains at 3%, above the Fed's 2% target.

Political tensions surfaced as President Trump attempted to dismiss Fed Governor Lisa Cook. Wall Street reacted mixed, with the S&P 500 down 0.1% and Dow Jones up 0.5%.

How do you feel about the Federal Reserve's recent rate cut of 0.25 percentage points?

Jimmy Kimmel Suspended

Walt Disney suspended “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” indefinitely following Kimmel's comments about the assassination of Republican activist Charlie Kirk.

FCC Chairman Brendan Carr threatened broadcasters over misleading content, prompting Nexstar Media Group to pull the show due to Kimmel's remarks. President Donald Trump supported the suspension, while Democrats criticized it as censorship.

The controversy raises questions about media freedom and political discourse in the U.S. Additionally, Disney faces regulatory challenges as it seeks approval for ESPN’s acquisition of the NFL Network amid Nexstar's $6.2 billion Tegna acquisition.

Should the FCC enforce consequences on broadcasters for airing controversial content?

As our muscles age, they naturally lose mass, strength, and function – a result of certain muscle fibers shrinking – contributing to fatigue and weakness beginning as early as our 30s. Recent research highlights that the key player in this aging process is our mitochondria, tiny-but-mighty organelles that produce more than 90% of our body’s energy. Importantly, scientists have found a strong link between decreased mitochondrial health and muscle health decline with aging, emphasizing the importance of maintaining these cellular engines.

A new way to support and improve muscle health as we age, Mitopure® by Timeline is clinically shown to meaningfully boost our mitochondrial health to improve muscle strength, without any change in exercise required.

Housing Market Hits a Pothole

U.S. housing starts fell 8.5% in August 2025 to 1.307 million units, with single-family starts down 7% to 890,000—lowest since April 2023. Building permits dropped 3.7% to 1.312 million, lowest since May 2020.

The Federal Reserve reduced interest rates by 25 basis points to 4.00%-4.25%, yet skepticism persists due to weak job growth, with only 22,000 jobs added in August.

Unemployment rose to 4.3%. Homes are taking an average of 27 days to sell, a week longer than last year, as unsold inventories accumulate.

Analysts foresee ongoing challenges in residential investment through mid-2026 due to job security concerns.

Are you concerned that the accumulation of unsold homes will lead to a further decline in property values?

No-Sort Plastic Recycling

Researchers at Northwestern University developed a nickel-based catalyst for recycling mixed polyolefin plastics, which comprise nearly two-thirds of global single-use plastic use.

This catalyst converts mixed plastic waste into oils and waxes without the need for pre-sorting, improving recycling efficiency and economic viability. It operates at a lower temperature and pressure, requiring less catalyst while offering significantly greater activity.

Remarkably, it maintains performance even with 25% PVC contamination, tackling a major recycling barrier. With over 220 million tons of polyolefin produced annually, this breakthrough has the potential to greatly enhance global recycling efforts, where current rates are only 1% to 10%.

Do you believe that innovative recycling technologies like the nickel-based catalyst will sufficiently address the global plastic waste crisis?

Hypertension Management

Researchers have created the Blood Pressure Treatment Efficacy Calculator, utilizing data from nearly 500 clinical trials with over 100,000 participants to predict the blood pressure-lowering effects of various medications.

A reduction of 1mmHg in systolic blood pressure lowers the risk of heart attack or stroke by 2%. Many patients require significant reductions, often needing multiple medications, complicating treatment.

The calculator categorizes medications by effectiveness and aims to personalize hypertension management, which affects 1.3 billion people globally.

Testing in clinical trials is the next step for this tool, which is available at www.bpmodel.org. Effective treatment could save millions of lives each year.

Would you trust a calculator to predict the effectiveness of your blood pressure medication?
