Shifting ICE
Border Patrol commander Gregory Bovino is leaving Minneapolis amid backlash over the fatal shooting of Alex Pretti, a licensed gun owner and ICU nurse, by federal agents.
Two U.S. citizens were killed by immigration officers in Minnesota this month. President Trump sent border czar Tom Homan to lead ICE operations locally. About 3,000 immigration agents remain deployed despite calls from state leaders and major companies for de-escalation.
Legal challenges are underway to halt the immigration surge and preserve bodycam footage. Public protests continue, and political fallout includes a Republican gubernatorial candidate dropping out.
Some Republicans advocate restraint, while Democrats threaten DHS funding cuts, risking a government shutdown.

Medicare Rates Stay Flat
The Trump administration proposed nearly flat Medicare Advantage (MA) payment rates for 2027, with CMS planning a 0.09% net increase, much lower than the expected 4% to 6%.
This adds about $700 million to MA payments. Stock prices of major insurers declined sharply: Humana fell 13%, CVS Health 9%, UnitedHealth and Elevance around 9% and 5%, respectively, and Centene over 3%.
CMS will stop paying for diagnoses from unlinked chart reviews, reducing payments by 1.53 percentage points. Including risk score adjustments, CMS expects a 2.54% average payment rise.
Final rates will be set by April 2026, with tighter billing rules likely squeezing insurer margins in 2027.

USS Abraham Lincoln
The USS Abraham Lincoln carrier strike group, including three destroyers, deployed to the Middle East, entering U.S. Central Command’s area on January 26, 2026.

Business Spending Surge
In November 2025, U.S. durable goods orders rose 5.3% to $323.8 billion, reversing October’s 2.1% drop. Transportation equipment orders jumped 14.7%, led by a 97.6% surge in non-defense aircraft, with Boeing receiving 164 orders vs. 15 in October.
Core capital goods orders increased 0.7%, and shipments rose 0.4%. In December, equipment financing climbed 5.9% year-over-year to $10.6 billion, near record highs. Business confidence reached an 11-month peak of 64.6 in January 2026.
Orders for fabricated metal, electrical equipment, and machinery grew, while motor vehicle orders fell 0.5%.
Economists forecast a 7.5% annualized equipment spending growth in Q4 2025 amid tariff and weather challenges.

New 3D Color Imaging Technique
