Trade War Comes for Tech
President Trump plans to impose new tariffs on electronics, including smartphones, laptops, and chips, ending temporary exemptions.
The upcoming "special focus-type of tariff" is expected within one to two months, affecting about $100 billion in imports from China. Current tariffs on Chinese goods stand at 145%.
Since early April, market volatility has erased $2.1 trillion in value from companies like Apple and Nvidia. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick confirmed the exemptions are short-term.

Palm Sunday Attack in Ukraine
Russian missiles hit Sumy, Ukraine, killing 34 and injuring 117 during Palm Sunday celebrations.
Cluster munitions struck crowded civilian areas, making it the deadliest attack since September 2024. President Zelenskyy called it a "terrorist act" and urged international action.
Leaders from Britain, Germany, and Italy condemned the strike; President Trump called it “terrible” and pushed for peace talks.
The attack follows an April 4 strike in Kryvyi Rih that killed 20, including nine children.

China's Export Freeze
China has halted exports of rare earth minerals and magnets, affecting global industries including automotive, semiconductors, aerospace, and defense.
China produces 90% of rare earth magnets and now requires special export licenses, delaying shipments. The move retaliates against U.S. tariffs, now at 145%.
Seven medium and heavy rare earth metals are restricted. U.S. companies like Tesla and Lockheed Martin face supply risks.
Industry leaders warn of shortages if the freeze continues beyond current stockpiles. The ban highlights China’s dominance in rare earths and its strategic leverage in the escalating trade conflict with the U.S.

Arson Attack Shakes Pennsylvania Governor's Residence
Yesterday, Cody Balmer, 38, allegedly set fire to Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro’s residence around 2 a.m. during Passover. Shapiro, his family, and guests were safely evacuated.
Balmer climbed a 7-foot fence and used a homemade incendiary device, damaging the mansion’s southern wing. No injuries occurred. Balmer was arrested and charged with attempted murder, terrorism, aggravated arson, and assault.
He has a prior criminal record. Governor Shapiro called it an attack on the state and denounced rising political violence. The FBI is assisting in the investigation.

Brown Rice and Arsenic Risks
A study found that brown rice contains about 40% more inorganic arsenic than white rice, mostly in the bran. In the U.S., brown rice has 24% more total arsenic.
Children aged 6–24 months may consume 0.295 micrograms/kg of arsenic daily, exceeding the safe limit of 0.21. Arsenic builds up in rice due to flooded growing conditions.
While adults face lower risk, young children are more vulnerable. Data shows frequent brown rice consumers have higher exposure.
Researchers recommend a balanced diet of both brown and white rice to reduce arsenic intake while maintaining whole grain benefits.

Molecular Robots
Intelligent Computing detailed advances in DNA strand displacement circuits for use in living cells. These circuits use toehold-mediated strand displacement to perform logic operations, such as seesaw gates and hybridization chain reactions.
They respond to biological inputs like nucleic acids and proteins. Challenges include DNA degradation and delivery into cells. Solutions include terminal modifications and RNA-based circuits that cells can transcribe.
Potential applications include smart DNA machines for real-time sensing, computing, and control of biological functions.
