Turmoil in LA
President Trump deployed 2,000 National Guard troops to Los Angeles amid rising tensions over federal immigration enforcement, prompting protests. Governor Gavin Newsom condemned the deployment as unlawful and requested troop removal.
Protests began after federal raids led to over 100 immigrant arrests, spreading to surrounding cities. Demonstrators clashed with police, blocking major roads and resulting in numerous arrests. Trump labeled protesters as violent, while local leaders criticized the federal response for exacerbating chaos.
This deployment marks a rare instance of National Guard activation without state approval.

New Antibiotic Discovery
Researchers have discovered a new antibiotic, lariocidin, derived from the soil bacterium Paenibacillus, effective against drug-resistant bacteria. It targets the ribosome, disrupting protein synthesis without affecting human cells.
Antibiotic resistance causes about 4.5 million deaths annually, underscoring the need for new treatments. In mouse models, lariocidin successfully cleared Acinetobacter baumannii infections with no adverse effects.
Development for human use will require extensive testing to improve stability and production.

Why Cats Purr
Research from Kyoto University identifies genetic factors in cat purring, analyzing DNA from 280 domestic cats.
The study finds that cats with a short-type androgen receptor gene purr more often, especially males, compared to those with the long-type gene, which is present only in domestic cats. Mixed-breed cats exhibit higher vocal activity than pure-breds, suggesting that gene variation originated during domestication.
Previous research indicates that vocal communication is less important for cats raised by humans, as pure-breds rely less on vocalizations.
