UnitedHealth Faces Federal Scrutiny

Banking Capital Requirement Cuts

U.S. regulators will announce cuts to capital requirements for banks, the largest changes in over a decade.

The supplementary leverage ratio (SLR) will likely be lowered, reducing the mandatory capital buffer for major banks. This could enable banks to boost lending following recent Treasury market volatility.

Metformin for Knee Osteoarthritis

Recent research shows metformin, a diabetes medication, reduces knee pain in overweight osteoarthritis patients, offering a low-cost alternative to surgery.

A trial with 107 participants showed a 31.3-point reduction in pain for the metformin group versus 18.9 for placebo, equating to a 52% decrease.

Metformin also promotes metabolic health and supports weight loss, with participants losing an average of 1.8 kg. Researchers advocate for its off-label use in treating knee osteoarthritis to improve patient outcomes and lower healthcare costs.

Vaping’s Popcorn Lung

A U.S. teenager developed "popcorn lung" after vaping for three years, resulting in coughing, wheezing, and breathlessness. This condition is linked to diacetyl, a toxic chemical formerly found in popcorn production, which remains legal in U.S. e-cigarettes.

Inhalation of diacetyl causes lung inflammation and damage, with no cure available. The vaping industry uses over 180 flavoring agents, many untested for safety when inhaled.

Vaping is popular among youth, correlating with increased respiratory issues. Stricter regulations and clearer labeling are needed to protect young users from vaping's health risks, as evidenced by alarming cases like the teenager's.
