Big Beautiful All Nighter
The Senate is debating overnight Trump’s $3.3 trillion tax and spending bill, combining permanent extension of 2017 tax cuts, $1.2 trillion in Medicaid and food stamp cuts, and increased defense and border funding.
It raises the SALT deduction cap to $40,000 and adds $5 trillion to the debt ceiling. The bill would increase the deficit by nearly $3.3 trillion over 10 years and reduce health coverage for 11.8 million Americans by 2034.
It phases out green energy credits and imposes excise taxes on foreign parts in wind and solar projects. GOP divisions and Democratic opposition persist, with uncertain Senate passage ahead of House return.

Amazon’s Robotics Revolution
Amazon has deployed over one million robots in 300+ fulfillment centers, nearly matching its human workforce. Robots perform heavy lifting and repetitive tasks, with models like Vulcan picking items.
The new AI system DeepFleet reduces robot travel time by 10%, accelerating deliveries and cutting costs and energy use. Amazon trained 700,000 employees to maintain robots, boosting wages up to 2.5 times for skilled roles.
Employee counts per center fell to 670, the lowest in 16 years, while packages shipped per worker rose from 175 in 2015 to 3,870 now. Expansion includes new centers in Japan and tests of humanoid robots.

Ukraine’s Hybrid Warfare
Ukraine combines Western arms with indigenous tech like the 280-kg TerMIT unmanned ground vehicle, which delivers supplies and deploys anti-tank mines remotely.
This mix of traditional weapons and new drone and robotic systems forms a hybrid operational force linking conventional firepower with advanced technology via electronic warfare and strong command control.
Despite a three-to-one troop disadvantage against Russia, Ukraine uses tactical innovation to multiply its combat effectiveness, repelling advances.
This approach reflects a shift toward integrated, adaptable warfare, demonstrating how rapid innovation and technology integration can offset numerical inferiority and likely influence future asymmetric conflicts globally.
Does Ukraine’s hybrid warfare approach suggest that asymmetric conflicts will become the new norm globally?Click to see live results and comment! |

Tariff Deadline Nears
The U.S. will reinstate higher tariffs (11%-50%) on July 9 unless new trade deals are reached. Trump criticized Japan for limiting U.S. rice imports despite domestic shortages and maintains a 25% auto tariff.
Japan resists changing agricultural protections but has increased U.S. rice imports due to high prices. Treasury warns unresolved talks will trigger tariff snapbacks. The EU seeks tariff reductions on pharmaceuticals, autos, and steel, while India’s talks stall over farm and steel tariffs.
Indonesia and Thailand propose easing tariffs; South Korea requests deadline extensions. Britain secured limited tariff cuts on cars and aerospace. U.S.-China talks continue separately, targeting an August deadline. Only Britain has a partial deal so far.

Blocking Ribosomal RNA Stops Tumor Growth
Researchers discovered that blocking RNA Polymerase 1 (Pol 1), which produces ribosomal RNA, halts tumor growth in cancers with RPL22 mutations or high MDM4/RPL22L1 levels.
These mutations are common in mismatch repair-deficient cancers like colorectal, stomach, and uterine tumors. Testing over 300 cancer cell lines, two Pol 1 inhibitors were studied: BMH-21 and BOB-42. BOB-42 reduced tumor growth by up to 77% in animal models of melanoma and colorectal cancer.
Pol 1 inhibition triggers RNA splicing changes that suppress tumors and may boost immune system recognition, suggesting potential for combination with immunotherapy to treat resistant, genetically unstable cancers.

‘Off Switch’ Could Halt Heart Disease and Diabetes
Researchers identified enzyme IDO1 as responsible for disrupting cholesterol uptake by macrophages during inflammation, producing kynurenine that impairs cholesterol clearance.
Blocking IDO1 restored macrophage function, potentially preventing clogged arteries linked to heart disease, diabetes, cancer, and dementia. Nitric oxide synthase (NOS) was also found to worsen cholesterol processing. Inhibiting both enzymes could offer a new two-step treatment approach.
Chronic inflammation hampers macrophages’ cholesterol absorption, increasing disease risk. Next steps focus on understanding IDO1’s role in cholesterol regulation and developing safe inhibitors to treat inflammation-related diseases.
