Congress Passes Big Beautiful Bill

Congress passed Trump’s $3.4 trillion tax and spending bill, with the House approving it 218-214 and the Senate passing it via a tie-breaking vote.

The legislation adds $3.4 trillion to the debt over 10 years, permanently extends 2017 tax cuts, raises the child tax credit, and increases the SALT deduction cap. It allocates $350 billion for border security, including new ICE hires and migrant detention beds, and $25 billion for missile defense.

To offset costs, it cuts $1.2 trillion from Medicaid and food stamps, imposing new work requirements and co-pays. It ends many green energy incentives and raises the debt ceiling by $5 trillion. Democrats oppose it; Republicans call it economic stimulus.

How do you feel about this new tax and spending bill?

June Jobs Report

The U.S. added 147,000 jobs in June, with government hiring accounting for 73,000 and private-sector gains at just 74,000—the smallest since October 2024.

Manufacturing, wholesale trade, and professional services shed jobs, while healthcare, social assistance, construction, and transportation added positions. The labor force participation rate fell to 62.3%, with 130,000 leaving the workforce and discouraged workers rising to 637,000.

Long-term unemployment increased by 190,000 to 1.647 million. Wage growth slowed, average workweek shortened, and the Federal Reserve is unlikely to cut rates soon.

Trade tariffs and immigration enforcement are restricting labor supply and private hiring, signaling slower job growth ahead despite headline gains.

Given the slowdown in private-sector hiring, do you think the U.S. economy is currently on a stable or precarious footing?

US Clears GE to Restart Jet Engine Shipments to China

The US has approved GE Aerospace to resume exporting LEAP-1C and CF34 jet engines to China’s COMAC, ending a five-week suspension.

These engines power COMAC’s C919 and C909 aircraft, which rely on foreign components to compete with Airbus and Boeing. The LEAP-1C is co-produced by GE and Safran. The US also lifted export restrictions on chip design software and ethane exports to China, indicating progress in trade talks.

Earlier restrictions followed retaliatory tariffs and Chinese limits on rare earth exports, disrupting supply chains. Meanwhile, US licenses for nuclear equipment exports to China remain suspended, affecting firms like Westinghouse and Emerson.

How do you view the recent US decision to resume exports to China’s COMAC—more as a positive step toward cooperation or a risky concession?

Russia’s Massive Drone Assault

Russia launched a six-hour drone and missile assault on Kyiv this morning, hitting five districts, residential areas, a medical facility, and railway infrastructure, injuring at least 14 people.

Kyiv’s air defenses engaged dozens of drones. The strike followed a call between Trump and Putin, with no progress on ending the war. Russia deployed a hypersonic Kinzhal missile and multiple ballistic missiles in two waves.

The attack comes after the U.S. paused shipments of critical weapons to Ukraine, which Kyiv warns weakens its defense. Zelenskyy seeks to discuss weapon deliveries with Trump.

Brown Fat to Beat Obesity

Cold exposure activates brown fat by lowering inhibitory factor 1, enabling mitochondria to burn calories as heat. This shifts brown fat fuel preference from fatty acids to increased glucose use via the malate-aspartate shuttle (MAS) regulated by GOT1.

A three-week cold study in mice showed doubled food intake, shrinking white fat but enlarged brown fat through precursor cell growth. White fat releases fatty acids, the liver increases fat burning and glucose output, and plasma protein fetuin A promotes white fat lipolysis.

Cold and obesity induce opposite protein changes in brown fat, suggesting obesity impairs its function. Human genetics link cold-regulated brown fat proteins to metabolic health. These findings reveal a multitissue metabolic network for fuel switching and obesity treatment potential.

Have you ever intentionally used cold exposure methods (e.g., cold showers, ice baths) for health or fitness purposes?

The Probiotic Cocktail That Could Slow Alzheimer’s

A multi-strain probiotic cocktail reduced brain inflammation, amyloid plaque buildup, and strengthened the blood-brain barrier in mice over 16 weeks, improving cognitive function in Alzheimer’s models.

It targets gut bacteria to prevent “leaky gut” induced systemic inflammation, which contributes to neuroinflammation and neuronal damage. Unlike treatments focusing on the brain, this probiotic shifts gut microbiota from harmful to beneficial strains.

Researchers plan human clinical trials to validate its effect and aim to commercialize it as a daily preventative for neurodegenerative diseases.

If a daily probiotic supplement could slow cognitive decline, would you consider taking it preventively?
