Court Blocks Trump's Tariff Power
A federal court has declared President Trump's tariffs illegal, stating he exceeded his authority under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act.
The ruling invalidates his tariffs, which reached 54%, impacting the $1.2 trillion trade deficit, while leaving existing tariffs on autos and steel intact. Lawsuits from small businesses and 12 states argued the tariffs harmed operations and burdened consumers.
Markets responded positively, with the U.S. dollar strengthening and Wall Street futures rising. The administration plans to appeal, asserting trade deficits are a national emergency.
The U.S. Supreme Court may ultimately decide on the tariffs, affecting global trade dynamics.

Chevron’s Narrow Escape
Despite exporting up to 290,000 barrels per day in 2023, output has declined due to U.S. sanctions and PDVSA mismanagement, with national production at approximately 1 million barrels per day. Maduro's government has rejected U.S. sanctions as economic warfare.
Chevron will retain staff in Venezuela, but PDVSA will manage operations. The authorization follows accusations against Maduro for inadequate electoral reforms, highlighting the complexities of operating under restrictive regulations amid political tensions.

Early Alzheimer’s Detection Test
Researchers developed the Penta-Plex Alzheimer’s Disease Capture Sandwich Immunoassay (5ADCSI), a blood test that identifies five key Alzheimer’s biomarkers.
This test surpasses existing commercial options, measuring proteins like amyloid and tau linked to Alzheimer’s progression. It analyzed 63 blood samples from Alzheimer’s patients, those with mild cognitive impairment, and healthy individuals, revealing the highest biomarker levels in Alzheimer’s cases.
The cost-effective test utilizes xMAP® technology, enabling potential annual screenings. Researchers plan to further validate the test across hundreds of patients and aim to pair it with genetic testing for individual disease risk assessment.

Gum Disease Bacteria and Heart Health
Gum disease bacteria, specifically Porphyromonas gingivalis, can enter the bloodstream and damage heart tissue, increasing the risk of atrial fibrillation (AFib) by 30% in individuals with periodontitis.
A study showed that infected mice had a sixfold higher risk of AFib compared to uninfected mice, with heart scarring reaching 21.9% in the infected group. The bacteria were also found in samples from 68 AFib patients, particularly those with severe gum disease.
Maintaining oral hygiene may help protect heart health, supporting the need for periodontal treatment to reduce AFib risk.
