Marines Deployed to LA
Approximately 700 Marines have been deployed to Los Angeles in response to escalating protests against immigration enforcement, which began following federal arrests of immigrants and have spread to nine other cities.
This marks the first instance in 60 years where a president has called up the California National Guard against the governor’s wishes. The deployment could expand to 4,000 troops.
Critics, including the state attorney general, argue this infringes on state sovereignty and misuses military force.
The Trump administration intends to intensify immigration raids, aiming to arrest over 100,000 undocumented immigrants.

Russia's Drone Strikes and POW Exchanges
Russia's drone strikes have surged in early June 2025, targeting Kyiv and Odesa, resulting in one death and extensive infrastructure damage. Kyiv experienced strikes across seven districts, causing widespread fires and injuries.
Odesa's attack impacted a maternity hospital, leading to one fatality but no harm to patients. This followed Russia's largest strike, involving 479 drones, amid escalating tensions due to Ukraine's offensive actions.
Concurrently, Ukraine and Russia executed a prisoner exchange for soldiers under 25.

OpenAI’s Revenues Soars
OpenAI's annual revenue reached $10 billion as of June 2025, up from $5.5 billion in 2024, driven by increased usage of ChatGPT models. Projected revenue for 2025 is $12.7 billion, excluding Microsoft licensing revenue.
OpenAI lost $5 billion in 2024 but is growing faster than competitors like Anthropic, which reported $3 billion in revenue. A recent funding round valued OpenAI at approximately $300 billion.
The company has 500 million weekly active users and three million paying business users. However, high operational costs and the need for profitability remain concerns, despite rising acceptance of AI by large companies.

Vaccine Advisory Committee Shake-Up
Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. dismissed all 17 members of the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices, citing conflicts of interest.
Critics, including public health leaders, argue this undermines health agency credibility amid falling vaccination rates. The previous committee, appointed during 2024, exclusively comprised Biden appointees.
Concerns grow that new members may exhibit vaccine skepticism, with Republican Senator Bill Cassidy questioning their expertise. Kennedy asserts the changes are meant to reduce industry influence and boost public trust.

Strawberry Tree Extract
Research on strawberry tree extract (Arbutus unedo) shows promise for treating ulcerative colitis. In a study with 30 male rats, varying doses of the extract (75 mg, 150 mg, 300 mg) or sulfasalazine (100 mg) were tested over seven days.
The highest dose of strawberry tree extract achieved an 80% protection rate against colon damage, compared to 75% for sulfasalazine.
The extract reduced inflammation, preserved the colon's lining, and improved antioxidant levels. While results are promising for those suffering from ulcerative colitis.

Psychiatric Medications and ALS Risk
A study from the Karolinska Institute indicates that certain psychiatric medications may increase amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) risk.
Anxiolytics raise the risk by 34%, hypnotics and sedatives by 21%, and antidepressants by 26%. Despite the increased risk, ALS remains rare, affecting 9 in 100,000 people in the U.S.
Additionally, ALS patients using anxiolytics or antidepressants prior to diagnosis had shorter survival times, with a 52% and 72% increase in mortality, respectively.
Researchers suggest these findings may reflect links between psychiatric symptoms and ALS risk rather than direct medication effects.
