Good morning news friend! Discover today’s defining stories and the future they set in motion. 📰🌟
There’s a stat that haunts me.
90%.
That is the percentage of wealthy families that lose their entire fortune by the third generation.
It’s called the "Shirtsleeves Curse." The first generation builds the empire. The second generation stewards it. The third generation blows it.
Look at the Vanderbilts. At one point, they had more money than the US Treasury. Today? Not a single millionaire left among the descendants.
But then look at the Rothschilds. Still rich. Still compounding.
What’s the difference?
The Vanderbilts gave handouts. The Rothschilds built a Family Bank.
I went down the rabbit hole to figure out how this works. It’s not a trust fund (trust funds actually increase the odds of your kids failing). It’s a literal internal bank.
Instead of giving your kids cash, you lend it. You use the IRS’s own rules to undercut commercial mortgage rates, keep the interest payments in the family pot, and force your kids to be owners, not spenders.
I broke down the entire playbook in this Deep Dive:
The "No-Go" list (what you never fund).
The tax math (how to legally dodge the 40% gift tax).
The governance (how to say "no" without ruining Thanksgiving).
If you want your great-grandkids to actually know your name, read this.

Minneapolis Shooting
Federal agents shot Alex Pretti, a licensed gun owner and nurse, during a Minneapolis protest; he was reportedly subdued and in possession of a registered gun.
This is the second federal agent-involved death in the city in January, after Renee Good. Minnesota Governor Tim Walz activated the National Guard amid protests accusing federal agents of obstructing investigations.
DHS claimed Pretti was threatening federal agents, but Minneapolis police contradicted this. Political responses include congressional Republicans calling for investigations, and Senate Democrats threatening to block DHS funding without reforms to ICE and Border Patrol.
The situation highlights tensions over federal immigration enforcement, state authority, and raises concerns ahead of the 2026 midterms. Congressional hearings are planned.

Massive Winter Storm
A winter storm hit the U.S., dumping up to 18 inches of snow in New England and a foot in New York City, with freezing rain causing up to 0.75 inches of ice in Tennessee.
Over 750,000 homes and businesses lost power, mainly in Texas, Tennessee, Louisiana, and Mississippi; 217,000 remained without electricity by early Sunday.
State and federal emergencies were declared in 17 states plus D.C., with disaster declarations approved for 11 states. More than 16,000 flights were canceled from the weekend through Tuesday.
Grid operators declared energy emergencies and relaxed environmental limits to maintain power. Bitter cold and ice delayed recovery; officials warned of severe impacts nationwide.

China’s Top General
China’s top general Zhang Youxia is under investigation for leaking nuclear secrets to the U.S., accepting bribes, and abusing authority. Zhang, 75, linked to former Defense Minister Li Shangfu’s corruption, also faces charges of forming political cliques.
The probe involves Gu Jun, ex-head of China National Nuclear Corp., over nuclear data leaks. Since 2023, China has purged over 50 senior military officers, reducing active CMC generals from six to one.
This is the largest such military shake-up since Mao’s era. The purge disrupts command and may weaken China’s military readiness ahead of the 2027 leadership transition.
The crackdown coincides with heightened U.S.-China tensions over Taiwan.

Gold Hits $5,000
Gold exceeded $5,000 an ounce for the first time, reaching about $5,040, rising over 8% last week and doubling in value over two years.
Silver surpassed $100 an ounce, up 147% in the past year. The US dollar index fell 1.6%, boosting gold’s appeal as a safe haven amid political tensions, including Trump’s actions on Greenland, Venezuela, and the Federal Reserve.
Central bank purchases and ETF inflows remain strong, with China buying gold for 14 consecutive months. Gold surged 64% in 2025 alone, driven by monetary easing and debt concerns.
Analysts predict gold could hit $6,400 in 2026. Platinum and palladium also reached record highs amid geopolitical risks.

Monkfruit Goodness
Monkfruit, a vine native to China, contains antioxidants, terpenoids, flavonoids, and amino acids in both peel and pulp.
Four varieties were analyzed, revealing these compounds reduce oxidative stress, support immunity, metabolism, and cell protection. Terpenoids provide antioxidant effects; flavonoids aid heart and metabolic health; amino acids assist muscle maintenance and tissue repair.
Each variety has a distinct compound profile, influencing nutritional and functional properties. The study examined compound concentrations and receptor interactions affecting inflammation and metabolism.
Findings suggest monkfruit's potential as a multifunctional food ingredient beyond sweetening, useful for developing enhanced food products and health applications.

World’s Smallest Wireless Neural Implant
Researchers developed MOTE, the world’s smallest wireless neural implant, measuring 300 by 70 microns. Powered by red and infrared laser light, it records brain activity and transmits data using infrared pulses.
Tested in mice for over a year, MOTE reliably captured neuron electrical spikes in the barrel cortex without causing brain irritation or immune response.
Unlike traditional electrodes, it operates faster than current imaging methods and does not require genetically modified neurons.
Its materials may enable brain monitoring during MRI scans. MOTE’s technology could extend to spinal cord monitoring and integrate with future devices like optoelectronic skull plates, advancing long-term neural monitoring and bio-integrated sensors.
