National Guard in Oregon
A federal judge in Portland blocked President Trump’s plan to send over 600 National Guard troops from Oregon, California, and Texas to address protests.
Judge Karin Immergut ruled the government failed to prove local law enforcement was overwhelmed. The Pentagon and Texas authorized troop deployments, but Oregon and California governors opposed and sued.
California Governor Newsom condemned the deployment as unlawful. Trump claimed the troops were necessary to restore order and appealed the decision. The restraining orders bar troop deployment to Portland until at least October 19.
The case underscores tensions over the federal use of military forces in domestic protests and conflicts between presidential authority and state rights.

Jeff Bezos Says This New Breakthrough is Like “Science Fiction”
He called it a “renaissance.” No wonder ~40,000 people backed Amazon partner Miso Robotics. Miso’s kitchen robots fried 4M food baskets for brands like White Castle. In a $1T industry with 144% employee turnover, that’s big. So are Miso’s partnerships with NVIDIA and Uber. Initial units of its newest robot sold out in one week. Invest before Miso’s bonus shares change on 10/9.

Gaza Ceasefire Negotiations
Hamas and Israel will hold hostage exchange talks in Egypt aiming to end Gaza fighting. Forty-eight hostages remain, with about 20 alive.
Hamas agreed to release them swiftly, but disarmament and other issues remain unresolved. U.S. and Qatar mediate; Secretary of State Rubio calls it the closest effort to free all hostages.
Trump’s 21-point peace plan includes hostage release, Hamas disarmament, and a provisional Gaza government. Despite Hamas accepting some terms, they refuse disarmament.

The Battle for Influence in the South China Sea
China ran a covert social media campaign in the Philippines via InfinitUs Marketing Solutions, using fake Facebook accounts and the pro-China outlet Ni Hao Manila to spread anti-U.S. and anti-Western vaccine messages.
The campaign targeted Filipino lawmakers supporting maritime claims against China and aimed to influence the May 2025 elections. The U.S. reaffirmed its defense commitment, introducing Senate Resolution 409 to expand joint military activities with the Philippines, which granted U.S. access to four additional bases in 2023.
China increased harassment of Philippine vessels near contested waters between 2023-2024. Both sides engage in information warfare, while the Philippines seeks stronger laws against foreign disinformation amid strategic tensions over Taiwan and the South China Sea.

Federal Shutdown Fallout
The U.S. government shutdown enters its sixth day with 750,000 federal workers furloughed and essential workers unpaid. The White House warns layoffs will increase if bipartisan talks fail.
Democrats demand permanent ACA subsidy extensions and no unilateral spending cuts; Republicans want to reopen the government before healthcare talks. The Senate stopgap funding bill lacks 60 votes, needing five more Democrats to pass.

Next Level Gene Editing
MIT researchers engineered mutated Cas9 proteins and added an RNA-binding protein to reduce prime editing errors from 1 in 7–121 edits to as low as 1 in 543. Their final prime editor, vPE, cut errors by up to 60 times without complicating delivery.
Tested in human and mouse cells, this method enhances prime editing’s precision by destabilizing DNA strands to improve DNA incorporation. Prime editing, which modifies one DNA strand to correct mutations, offers a safer alternative to CRISPR’s double-strand cuts.
This advance could accelerate gene therapies for hundreds of hereditary diseases, supporting research into cancer and drug development. Delivery efficiency remains a challenge.

Magic Mushrooms’ Hidden Power
A single psilocybin dose reduced pain sensitivity and depression-like behaviors in mice for nearly two weeks, using nerve injury and inflammatory pain models. Injecting its active metabolite, psilocin, into the anterior cingulate cortex reproduced these effects, while spinal injections did not, indicating brain circuit modulation.
Psilocybin acts as a partial agonist on serotonin receptors 5-HT2A and 5-HT1A; blocking them reversed benefits. With over 60 clinical trials supporting psychedelic therapies for pain and mood disorders, the FDA granted psilocybin breakthrough therapy status.
Though federally Schedule One, some US states have decriminalized its therapeutic use. Further research will explore dosing, long-term impacts, and safety in surgical contexts.
