Shooting of Israeli Embassy Staff Unfolds in D.C.
Two Israeli embassy staff members were shot and killed in Washington, D.C. outside the Capital Jewish Museum during a reception.
Elias Rodriguez, 30, approached the couple and opened fire, reportedly shouting "Free, free Palestine" after his arrest. The victims were about to get engaged. Law enforcement quickly detained Rodriguez, with no ongoing threat to the public.
Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu condemned the act as "horrific, antisemitic" and announced enhanced security for embassies.

GOP's Tax Cuts Push
House Republicans are advancing President Trump's $3.8 trillion tax and spending bill, aiming to extend 2017 tax cuts. Key aspects include new tax breaks for tipped income and auto loans, $1000 newborn ‘Trump accounts’, alongside stricter Medicaid work requirements.
Deductions for state and local taxes will increase from $10,000 to $40,000 for incomes up to $500,000. The bill could raise federal deficits by $3.8 trillion over ten years while proposing $1 trillion in cuts to Medicaid, food stamps, and other services.
GOP leaders remain confident in passing the bill, despite narrow margins and Democratic opposition .

OpenAI will acquire AI startup io, co-founded by Jony Ive (the legendary designer behind the iPhone), for nearly $6.5 billion, marking its largest acquisition.
Ive will head a new division focused on AI-powered hardware, aiming to develop innovative products that enhance human experiences. The all-stock deal will bring about 55 engineers and researchers from io to OpenAI, while LoveFrom will collaborate independently.
Previously, OpenAI acquired a 23% stake in io for $6.4 billion. The partnership intends to move users away from traditional screens and explore new gadget forms. The acquisition awaits regulatory approval and is expected to finalize this summer.

Bond Yields Surge Amid Fiscal Concerns
The U.S. Treasury's $16 billion auction of 20-year bonds saw weak demand, with yields climbing to 5.127%, the highest since November 2023.
Investor concerns stem from rising debt levels, Moody’s recent downgrade of the U.S. credit rating, and proposed tax-and-spending legislation potentially adding up to $5.2 trillion to national debt by 2034.
Indirect bidders made up 69% of the auction, but overall demand was below average, with a coverage ratio of 2.46, the lowest since February.
Stock markets reacted negatively, and 10-year Treasury yields increased to 4.607%. Analysts warn that ongoing weak demand may force changes in government auction sizes.

Gut Bacteria and Acetate
Researchers in Japan discovered that a combination of acetate and specific Bacteroides gut bacteria significantly reduces obesity in mice.
The supplement AceCel, which combines acetate with cellulose, promotes weight loss without muscle loss by enhancing fat energy production and lowering carbohydrate utilization.
This effect relies on the presence of Bacteroides bacteria, as demonstrated in trials with germ-free mice. The study highlights a novel approach to obesity treatment, moving beyond traditional dietary methods.
The researchers aim to confirm AceCel's safety and efficacy for human use, which could lead to advancements in obesity prevention through functional food products.

Rising Cancer Rates Among Young Adults
Between 2010 and 2019, cancer rates rose for 14 types among individuals under 50, including breast and colorectal cancers.
Conversely, 19 types, such as lung and prostate cancers, saw declines, keeping overall diagnosis rates stable. Approximately 2,020,829 early-onset cancers were identified, with 63.2% in females; the most common included breast, thyroid, and melanoma for women and colorectal and testicular cancers for men.
Notably, cancer death rates among young people remained unchanged. Researchers identified obesity and improved screening as potential risk factors.
The study emphasizes the need for further research into early-onset cancer trends and tailored prevention strategies for young adults.
