Shutdown Ends Soon
President Trump endorsed a bipartisan deal to end the government shutdown that began October 1, causing unpaid federal workers, halted food subsidies, and canceled flights.
The Senate passed the bill with eight moderate Democrats joining Republicans, funding the government through January 30, 2026. The $1.8 trillion increase raises the national debt, includes extended health insurance subsidies debated for a December vote, and blocks Trump from firing federal employees before funding expires.
The Republican-controlled House must approve the deal, with Speaker Mike Johnson pledging a quick vote. Experts warn the shutdown risks negative economic growth in Q4. The deal stabilizes services but leaves spending limits and health care subsidies unresolved.

Supreme Court Upholds Same-Sex Marriage Rights
The Supreme Court declined to revisit its 2015 ruling legalizing same-sex marriage nationwide, rejecting an appeal by Kim Davis, a former Kentucky clerk who refused to issue licenses to same-sex couples.
Davis was ordered to pay over $360,000 in damages for violating constitutional rights and had served jail time for contempt in 2015. The court’s 6-3 conservative majority left intact lower court decisions that government officials' duties are not protected by religious beliefs under the First Amendment.
The ruling preserves marriage equality across all states and maintains the judgment against Davis, signaling reluctance to overturn established precedents despite the court's conservative shift.

BBC Crisis
The BBC’s Director General Tim Davie and Head of News Deborah Turness resigned after criticism over a January 6 documentary that misleadingly edited Donald Trump’s speech to suggest incitement of the Capitol riot.
The BBC apologized and removed the film. Trump’s legal team demands a retraction and $1 billion compensation, threatening a lawsuit if unmet by November 14. A leaked memo alleges systemic BBC bias, complicating ongoing impartiality debates amid funding reviews.
The BBC lost 300,000 licence fee payers in 2024/25, reducing income by £50 million.
Should the BBC be held financially accountable if the documentary on Trump’s Jan. 6 speech was found to be misleading?Click to see live results and comment! |

Visa and Mastercard Settle After 20 Years
Visa and Mastercard agreed to a settlement capping consumer card interchange fees at 1.25% for eight years, cutting fees over 25% from current levels. Merchants can now reject certain higher-cost cards, including many premium rewards cards, and impose surcharges.
The deal could save merchants $200 billion over time. The settlement ends the “honor all cards” rule but leaves some “anti-steering” restrictions in place. Large merchant groups oppose the deal, citing minor fee cuts and potential fee increases after caps expire. Swipe fees rose to $111.2 billion in 2024.
Court approval is expected by late 2026 or early 2027. Visa and Mastercard support the settlement, emphasizing merchant benefits.

Beta-HPV
A study identified beta-HPV virus as a direct cause of aggressive cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (cSCC) in an immunocompromised patient. A 34-year-old woman with inherited T cell defects developed recurring tumors linked to beta-HPV DNA integrated in her cancer cells.
The virus produced proteins supporting tumor growth, independent of UV damage. After a bone marrow transplant restoring her immune function, her cancer and HPV-related warts cleared, and she stayed cancer-free for three years.
This case highlights beta-HPV’s role in skin cancer among patients with weakened immunity and suggests immune status should guide treatment. The findings may enable targeted therapies beyond traditional UV-focused approaches.

Natural Methods to Trigger GLP-1 Effects
Researchers identified natural compounds like cinnamon, ginger, fermented green tea, berberine, and flavonoids from citrus and hops that may stimulate GLP-1, a gut hormone targeted by diabetes drug Ozempic.
Timing consumption is key due to GLP-1’s rapid breakdown. A trial showed whey protein taken 15 minutes before meals lowered blood glucose and appetite in obese individuals. Dietary fiber supplements also improve blood sugar control and insulin sensitivity by boosting GLP-1.
Although studies are early, these findings suggest certain foods consumed strategically could help manage blood sugar and metabolic health, offering potential low-cost alternatives to GLP-1-based drugs for millions with type 2 diabetes.
