Texas Floods Kill 81
Central Texas floods have caused at least 81 deaths, including 28 children, with 41 missing. Kerr County was hardest hit, with 68 fatalities. Heavy rain caused the Guadalupe River to rise 26-29 feet rapidly, sweeping away campers and residents.
Rescue teams saved over 850 people, including 165 from Camp Mystic. Warning systems failed due to lack of infrastructure and delayed alerts. The region’s flood-prone history and Texas’s underfunded flood management worsened impacts.
The federal government deployed FEMA and Coast Guard assets. The floods rank among the deadliest U.S. disasters in a century.

Trump Hits BRICS
President Trump announced a new 10% tariff on countries supporting "Anti-American" BRICS policies, effective August 1 unless new trade deals are made.
Since April, tariffs range from 10% on most imports to 50% on steel and aluminum, aiming to cut the U.S. trade deficit. Deals are done with the UK and Vietnam; India nears a 10% tariff agreement.
Letters will notify about 100 smaller countries; Canada is exempt pending talks. Tariffs have generated $200 billion since April, coinciding with lower inflation and gas prices.
BRICS leaders condemned the moves, citing trade disruption, while the administration presses partners for negotiations ahead of the deadline.

Trump Netanyahu Meeting
Netanyahu and Trump met after joint strikes delayed Iran’s nuclear program by 1–2 years. They focus on Gaza, nearing a 60-day ceasefire that includes releasing 10 live and 18 deceased Israeli hostages.
Israel demands Hamas disarmament; Hamas wants a full Israeli withdrawal. Israel may accept exile for some Hamas leaders but opposes full leadership removal.
Post-war Gaza governance is disputed: Israel favors Arab states managing security, while those states want Palestinian Authority involvement and a political path for Palestinians.
Trump aims to expand the Abraham Accords, including peace with Syria and Saudi Arabia, though normalization with Riyadh depends on Palestinian statehood progress.

OPEC+ Accelerates Oil Output
OPEC+ will increase oil output by 548,000 barrels per day in August, exceeding prior monthly hikes. Since April, 1.918 million bpd of previous cuts have been restored, mainly from Saudi Arabia, Russia, UAE, and others.
The UAE received a separate 300,000 bpd increase. Despite this, 3.66 million bpd of cuts remain. Brent crude prices fell about 1.6% to $67 per barrel; West Texas Intermediate hovers near $66.
Analysts project supply will outpace demand by 1.25 million bpd in the second half of 2025, potentially pushing Brent prices to $50-$60 and WTI below $50.
The output increase aims to regain market share amid rising U.S. production and political pressure. Next review is August 3, 2025.

Gene Therapy Reverses Deafness
A gene therapy using a single injection of AAV-delivered OTOF gene restored hearing in 10 patients aged 1 to 24 with severe genetic deafness. After six months, average hearing improved from 106 dB (near total deafness) to 52 dB (mild/moderate loss), with best results in children aged 5–8.
The treatment, injected into the cochlea, caused only temporary neutrophil drops and no serious side effects during 6–12 month follow-up. This is the first successful trial including teenagers and adults.
Plans are underway to target other deafness genes like GJB2 and TMC1. The therapy offers a new personalized treatment option for millions with genetic hearing loss.

CD4 T Cells Unleash New Power Against Cancer
Researchers engineered CD4 T cells to directly kill cancer cells by targeting the NY-ESO-1 tumor antigen, found in many cancers including melanoma, lung, ovarian, sarcoma, and brain tumors.
This challenges the view that CD4 cells only support other immune cells. The engineered cells selectively attack tumors while sparing healthy tissue. The targeted antigen is presented by an HLA allele present in about 50% of Caucasians, potentially benefiting a large patient group.
Clinical trials will involve HLA typing, tumor analysis, and reinfusion of engineered cells. Plans include creating a donor cell bank for rapid treatment, with early success in pediatric neuroblastoma, offering new options for faster cancer immunotherapy.

“A man of principle is a curious thing. Everybody is in favor of righteousness right up until it requires them to miss a meal or disagree with a man who holds a club. But the upright man just clings to the truth like a turtle to its shell; and if you see him leaving the party, you can wager it's because the party packed up and moved clean away from where the truth lives.”
