Tragedy Strikes Vancouver

On April 26, a vehicle struck the Lapu Lapu Day festival in Vancouver, killing at least 11 people, including children, and injuring dozens.

The incident occurred around 8:14 PM, when a black Audi SUV accelerated through a crowded area near food trucks. The driver, 30-year-old Kai-Ji Adam Lo, was arrested and faces multiple murder charges, with mental health issues as a possible factor.

Authorities have ruled out terrorism. Vigils were held for the victims, as local leaders expressed shock and support for the grieving community.

Do you think enough is being done to address the issue of mental health in society?

Huawei Takes on Nvidia with New AI Chip

Huawei is introducing its advanced AI processor, the Ascend 910D, aiming to compete with Nvidia's market leadership. Planned sample availability is set for late May 2025.

Despite U.S. export restrictions, Huawei's chip production remains robust, supporting China's tech self-sufficiency goals. The Ascend 910D may outperform Nvidia's H100 chip, while Huawei has shipped over 800,000 Ascend 910B and 910C chips in 2025.

However, production challenges persist due to limited access to top-tier foundries and advanced tools.

Improvements in Huawei's CloudMatrix 384 system suggest potential advancements over Nvidia’s offerings in specific conditions.

Should the U.S. maintain restrictions on semiconductor exports to companies like Huawei?

Corporate Cost-Cutting in Uncertain Times

Companies are cutting costs due to uncertain trade policies, delaying investments and scrutinizing spending.

Dow plans to cut $6 billion and postpone a new plant. Boston Scientific is accelerating discretionary spending cuts, while Procter & Gamble focuses on cost controls. GE Aerospace anticipates $500 million losses from tariffs, and the staffing firm Robert Half has saved $80 million by cutting jobs.

Many firms are avoiding large layoffs to retain talent. Overall, companies are enhancing efficiency and adjusting spending strategies.

Will the current cost-cutting trend lead to greater efficiency or a decline in corporate competitiveness?

The Shift from Artificial Dyes

The demand for natural food coloring is increasing, pushing companies like Sensient Technologies to shift away from artificial dyes due to health concerns and regulatory pressure.

Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has condemned artificial dyes as harmful, and the FDA aims to phase out petroleum-based dyes by 2026. While natural dyes sourced from plants and insects are gaining popularity, they face supply limitations and higher production costs.

PepsiCo and General Mills plan to eliminate artificial colors, indicating a broader industry shift towards natural alternatives, despite challenges in stability and sourcing.

Do you believe that the shift to natural dyes will ultimately improve food safety?

Something Better than a Cholesterol Test

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading global cause of death, often linked to lifestyle factors.

A study involving 200,000 UK Biobank participants found that measuring apolipoprotein B (apoB) provides a more accurate heart disease risk profile than traditional cholesterol tests.

The research indicates that apoB levels are crucial in assessing risk, with current tests underestimating risk in about 8% of individuals. Elevated lipoprotein(a) can also significantly increase heart disease risk.

Researchers advocate for adopting apoB testing worldwide, as it is affordable and could enhance diagnostic accuracy in cardiovascular health screening.

It may enhance sleep quality, physical performance, and testosterone levels in men. Cognitive benefits are noted, especially in older adults.

Risks include unclear long-term safety, mild side effects, and interactions with certain medications. Individuals with liver disease or autoimmune conditions should avoid it, as should pregnant or breastfeeding women.
