Thanksgiving Trickle Travel

The U.S. government shutdown has lasted 40 days. The FAA cut flights by up to 10% at 40 major airports due to air traffic controller shortages; over 13,000 controllers and 50,000 screeners work without pay.

On Saturday, 1,550 flights were canceled and 6,700 delayed. Flight cuts may reach 20% if conditions worsen. Airlines canceled roughly 700 flights each. Pilots filed 500+ safety reports citing controller fatigue.

Concurrently, President Trump pushed to replace ACA subsidies with direct payments to individuals for private insurance amid stalled Senate talks. Senate Republicans rejected subsidy extensions and resisted abolishing the filibuster, prolonging political deadlock affecting healthcare funding for over 20 million Americans.

President Trump suggested dismantling ACA subsidies and sending money directly to people. What is your view on this proposal?

Wall Street Isn’t Warning You, But This Chart Might

Vanguard just projected public markets may return only 5% annually over the next decade. In a 2024 report, Goldman Sachs forecasted the S&P 500 may return just 3% annually for the same time frame—stats that put current valuations in the 7th percentile of history.

Translation? The gains we’ve seen over the past few years might not continue for quite a while.

Meanwhile, another asset class—almost entirely uncorrelated to the S&P 500 historically—has overall outpaced it for decades (1995-2024), according to Masterworks data.

Masterworks lets everyday investors invest in shares of multimillion-dollar artworks by legends like Banksy, Basquiat, and Picasso.

And they’re not just buying. They’re exiting—with net annualized returns like 17.6%, 17.8%, and 21.5% among their 23 sales.*

Wall Street won’t talk about this. But the wealthy already are. Shares in new offerings can sell quickly but…

Russia’s Lavrov Signals to Engage U.S.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov expressed willingness to meet U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio to discuss the Ukraine war, stressing Moscow’s demand for recognition of Russian interests and territorial claims, including Crimea.

Last month’s U.S.-Russia summit was canceled over Moscow’s demands for Ukraine’s NATO renunciation and troop withdrawals from occupied regions. Russian forces control about 19% of Ukraine and launched recent missile and drone attacks on Ukrainian energy infrastructure, causing outages and casualties.

Ukraine retaliated with attacks on Russian cities, prompting power outages. Russia reported over 1.15 million troop losses since February 2022. U.S. sanctions target Russia’s energy sector, while exemptions were granted to some countries. Diplomatic progress remains stalled amid ongoing conflict.

Do sanctions targeting Russia’s energy sector effectively pressure Moscow to end the war?

Thanksgiving Meal Costs

Walmart, Aldi, and Target offer cheaper Thanksgiving meal kits for 2025, but kits contain fewer items and more private-label products.

Walmart’s kit feeds 10 for under $40, down from 8 for $56 last year, replacing ingredients with cheaper options and switching turkey brands. Aldi’s spread costs $40, down from $47, swapping turkeys and cutting produce prices. Target’s seven-item kit remains under $20 but replaces national brands with store brands and drops some items.

Food prices rose 2.7% year-over-year in September 2025; 58% of shoppers worry about inflation, and 31% prefer store brands. SNAP food aid delays amid shutdowns increase pressure on low-income households.

Would you personally choose a cheaper meal kit with private-label products or buy individual branded items separately?

Crypto Treasury Selloff

Bitcoin fell 15% last month, dragging down crypto-treasury firms heavily invested in digital tokens. MicroStrategy (now Strategy) lost 26%, declining from a $128 billion July peak to about $70 billion.

Ether-focused companies BitMine Immersion Technologies and ETHZilla dropped over 30% and 23%, respectively. These firms used borrowed funds or share sales to buy cryptocurrencies, amplifying losses amid falling prices. The selloff intensified after Trump's October 10 tariff announcement, a prolonged government shutdown, and Federal Reserve uncertainty.

Some companies raised capital above current share prices, like Strive, whose shares fell 28%. Despite losses, some investors remain optimistic. Analysts warn continued declines jeopardize crypto-treasury firms' ability to raise capital and sustain their business models.

Gluten Sensitivity

A review of 58 studies found true gluten-specific reactions in non-celiac individuals are rare and mild. Symptoms often stem from FODMAPs, especially fructans in wheat, onions, and garlic.

Up to 15% report gluten-related gut problems, but many show equal or stronger placebo responses, highlighting psychological influences. Celiac disease affects about 1%, requiring strict gluten avoidance. Non-celiac gluten sensitivity diagnosis excludes celiac and wheat allergy and favors a low-FODMAP diet before gluten elimination.

Gluten-free products cost 139% more and may reduce nutrients and diversity. Researchers recommend personalized dietary and psychological approaches, viewing gluten sensitivity as a gut-brain disorder similar to irritable bowel syndrome.

Gum Disease Brain Damage

A study of 1,143 adults (average age 77) found those with gum disease had 2.83% brain volume affected by white matter hyperintensities (WMHs), compared to 2.52% without.

Gum disease increased the odds of severe WMH damage by 56% after adjusting for risk factors. Among participants, 28% with gum disease had the highest WMH levels versus 19% without. Gum disease combined with cavities raised stroke risk by 86%, while good oral hygiene cut stroke risk by up to 81%.

No link was found between gum disease and other brain lesions. The findings suggest oral inflammation may contribute to brain small vessel disease and stroke risk.
