Trump's 90-Day Tariff Pause
President Trump announced a 90-day tariff pause for most nations, lowering rates to 10% for many, down from 20% for the EU, 24% for Japan, and 25% for South Korea.
Canada and Mexico remain excluded due to separate 25% tariffs tied to fentanyl concerns. At the same time, Trump raised tariffs on Chinese imports to 125%, up from 104%.
The S&P 500 jumped 9.5% after the announcement, following sharp market losses. Over 75 countries requested talks, which Trump cited as a factor in the pause.

Strong Demand for US Treasury's 10-Year Note
The US Treasury raised $39 billion through a 10-year note auction with strong demand. The high yield was 4.435%, below forecast, and the bid-to-cover ratio hit 2.67, the highest since December 2024.
Indirect bidders, including foreign buyers, made up 87.9% of bidsāa record. The auction followed market turbulence driven by tariff hikes, including a 104% rate on Chinese goods.
A prior $58 billion auction of 3-year notes was poorly received. The Treasury will next auction $22 billion in 30-year bonds amid ongoing economic uncertainty.

House Republicans Stall Budget Vote
House Republicans delayed a vote on President Trumpās budget and tax cut plan due to internal GOP disagreements.
The proposal includes $7 trillion in tax cuts and $175 billion for border security but lacks enough spending cuts for some conservatives. Speaker Mike Johnson held a procedural vote passing 216ā215 but couldnāt secure full support.
The national debt stands at $36 trillion, and GOP holdouts demand deeper cuts. Trump urged unity, warning of a ā22% tax hikeā if the plan fails.
Democrats oppose the bill, citing cuts to social programs like Medicaid affecting all congressional districts.

OpenAI vs. Elon Musk
OpenAI filed a countersuit against Elon Musk accusing him of harassment and seeking a court injunction to block his actions.
Musk, a co-founder who left before OpenAIās success, now runs rival firm xAI. The dispute centers on OpenAIās shift to a for-profit model, key to securing $40 billion in funding by year-end.
OpenAI claims Musk launched social media attacks and made a failed $97.4 billion takeover bid. A jury trial is set for spring 2026. Musk previously sued OpenAI in August 2024, alleging it abandoned its original mission.

Fluorosensor Detects RNA in Real Time
Researchers developed a new fluorosensor that detects enteroviral RNA with high sensitivity. The sensor uses carbon dots (CDs) functionalized with a single-stranded probe and ethidium bromide (EB).
It outperforms traditional sensors by providing real-time detection of RNA release from viral capsids. The functionalized sensor shows better selectivity and charge transfer due to covalent bonding.
The team plans to replace EB with a safer dye. This sensor offers a powerful tool for early viral detection and improved diagnostics.

Proteinās Dual Role in Parkinsonās and Melanoma
Researchers found that alpha-synuclein, a small protein, plays a key role in both Parkinsonās disease and melanoma.
In neurons, it helps repair DNA but becomes toxic in excess, forming Lewy bodies that cause cell death. In melanoma cells, alpha-synuclein remains in the nucleus and promotes cancer growth by repairing DNA damage.
Targeting alpha-synuclein or boosting repair proteins like 53BP1 could treat both diseases.
