Trump’s Asia Push

President Trump’s Asia trip includes trade talks with South Korea, aiming to resolve deadlock over a $350 billion investment deal.

In Tokyo, Japan pledged up to $400 billion in investments in energy, AI, and critical minerals, following a $550 billion U.S. pledge.

Trump emphasized reducing trade barriers and U.S. economic security at the APEC summit. A meeting with China’s Xi Jinping may address lowering U.S. tariffs on fentanyl-related goods and AI technology, after partial easing of tariffs on rare earth exports boosted markets.

North Korea's recent nuclear-capable missile tests raise security concerns. Markets rose during the trip.

Do you believe President Trump's emphasis on trade deals during his Asia trip will significantly improve U.S. economic security?

Apple’s rumored Face-ID door lock and smart display hub are more than just new products. It’s a clear signal: they’re going all-in on smart home automation.

The tech giant is doubling down on the smart home, the $158B industry that’s growing 23% annually.

And with Apple’s entry, investors are looking for the next breakout company - and potential acquisition target.

They’re chasing Google (acquired Nest, $3.2B) and Amazon (acquired Ring, $1.2B).

History shows: when Apple plays catch-up, they go big.

And there’s one startup perfectly positioned to benefit.

With 10+ patents, distribution in over 100 Best Buy stores, and revenue growth that doubled year-over-year, they’re built for a huge breakout.

Early investors in Ring and Nest saw life-changing returns.

U.S. Military Strikes Drug Trafficking Vessels

The Trump administration launched its largest military strike against drug traffickers in the eastern Pacific, destroying four boats and killing 14 suspects.

Since September, U.S. forces have conducted at least 13 strikes in the Caribbean and Pacific, killing about 57 traffickers from Venezuela, Colombia, and Ecuador. The Pentagon deployed the Gerald Ford carrier strike group, adding roughly 10,000 troops and advanced military assets to Latin America.

Congressional leaders have limited insight into operations, with information restricted by nondisclosure orders. Mexico criticized the strikes, Venezuela condemned the U.S. buildup, and U.S.-Colombia relations worsened after sanctions and accusations against President Petro.

Legal experts question the military’s role in these lethal counter-narcotics strikes.

Is using lethal force justified against suspected drug traffickers at sea without clearer transparency and congressional oversight?

ICE Workings

The Trump administration is replacing nearly half of ICE field office directors, affecting up to 12 of 25 offices, to increase immigration arrests. New leaders, mainly from Border Patrol, will shift tactics from targeted arrests to broad raids.

The administration targets 3,000 daily arrests, per Stephen Miller. In Chicago, a federal judge ordered daily court appearances and use of body cameras by Border Patrol commander Gregory Bovino after citing excessive force, including firing tear gas at peaceful protesters and children.

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem advocates focusing on arresting undocumented immigrants with criminal records, while ICE and Border Patrol leaders support broader arrests. Legal challenges and court blocks complicate enforcement efforts.

25-Year Crohn’s Disease Mystery Solved

Researchers solved how NOD2 gene mutations cause Crohn’s disease by combining AI and molecular biology. They identified 53 genes distinguishing inflammatory from healing macrophages, focusing on girdin, a protein binding NOD2 to regulate gut inflammation and tissue repair.

Common Crohn’s mutations remove NOD2’s girdin-binding region, disrupting this control, leading to persistent inflammation and gut damage. Mice lacking girdin developed gut inflammation, microbiome disruptions, and fatal sepsis. Activating NOD2 protected healthy mice but not girdin-deficient ones, confirming the bond’s importance.

This discovery explains the 25-year-old genetic puzzle and suggests new treatments aimed at restoring the NOD2-girdin interaction to rebalance gut immunity, advancing Crohn’s therapy beyond broad immune suppression.

How confident are you in AI’s role playing a central part in major medical discoveries?

Off-The-Shelf Cancer Treatment

MIT and Harvard researchers engineered donor-derived CAR-NK cells with modified surface proteins to evade immune rejection, enabling off-the-shelf cancer treatments.

Current CAR-NK therapies use patient-derived cells requiring weeks to prepare. These engineered cells combine immune evasion with enhanced cancer-killing ability in one genetic construct.

In mice, the new CAR-NK cells persisted at least three weeks, unlike standard ones that were quickly rejected. They also reduced cytokine release syndrome risk. This approach may improve CAR-T therapies, which are effective only for some patients.

Human clinical trials are planned to test the potential of ready-made CAR-NK cells as practical cancer immunotherapies.

Sources: Sciencealert.

Should cancer immunotherapies prioritize faster, off-the-shelf treatments even if they come with unknown long-term risks?
