Trump Signals Shift in U.S.-China Relations

President Trump hinted at potentially ending escalating tariffs between the U.S. and China, currently 145% on Chinese goods and 125% on U.S. imports.

He expressed a desire to avoid further increases in tariffs, stating, “At a certain point, you make it where people don’t buy.”

He expressed optimism for trade talks, noting China’s interest in negotiations.

High-level U.S.-China exchanges have decreased, creating uncertainty in negotiations, though Trump maintains a favorable view of President Xi Jinping.

Google’s Antitrust Ruling

A U.S. District Judge ruled that Google maintains illegal monopolies in online advertising technology, highlighting exploitation of publishers and advertisers.

The decision, stemming from a lawsuit by the U.S. Justice Department, found Google guilty of unlawfully dominating publisher ad servers and ad exchanges.

Google plans to appeal the ruling. The ruling may lead to increased demands for Google to divest parts of its ad business, worth $1.8 trillion.

A remedy hearing is expected later this year or early next year, alongside another trial regarding Google's search engine dominance.

Is the U.S. government's intervention in Google's advertising business justified?

Labor Market Stability Contrasts with Housing Decline

The U.S. labor market is stable despite challenges from tariffs impacting home construction.

Initial jobless claims fell to 215,000, while continuing claims rose to 1.885 million. In March, single-family housing starts dropped 14.2% to 940,000, the lowest since July, with permits down 2.0%.

Tariffs have raised material costs for builders by 6.3%, adding roughly $10,900 per home. D.R. Horton revised revenue estimates down to $33.3-$34.8 billion.

Despite high prices, the Midwest saw a 76.2% increase in housing starts, but a decline in new residential construction is anticipated in the coming months.

What is more relevant for the economy right now. Steady labor market stability or declining housing starts?

Breakthrough in CO2 Utilization

Scientists from Tohoku University, Hokkaido University, and AZUL Energy have developed a method to convert carbon dioxide (CO2) into carbon monoxide fuel (CO) in just 15 minutes, significantly faster than the previous 24-hour process.

Using cobalt phthalocyanine (CoPc) as a catalyst on gas diffusion electrodes, the system shows stable performance for 144 hours at a current density of 150 mA/cm².

This technology exceeds industrial benchmarks for efficiency, potentially aiding in carbon capture and utilization while addressing climate change.

Do you believe that the advancement of CO2 to CO conversion technology will significantly impact climate change?

PROTACs Reimagined for Effective Cancer Treatment

Researchers from Duke University have improved the delivery of cancer drugs known as PROTACs, using the natural protein CD36.

Their method increases drug uptake by 7.7 to 22.3 times, enhancing effectiveness by up to 23 times.

This strategy, called chemical endocytic medicinal chemistry (CEMC), allows PROTACs over 1,000 dalton to enter cancer cells more efficiently. Potential applications extend beyond cancer to neurodegenerative diseases like Parkinson's.

Current clinical trials involve eight oral PROTAC drugs, including one in Phase 3 for breast cancer.

Do you believe that the advancements in PROTACs will lead to significant improvements in cancer treatment?
