Trump & The Generals

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and President Trump convened 800 top military leaders, unveiling new policies.

Hegseth ended diversity programs, imposed male-level fitness tests, stricter grooming rules, and fired over a dozen senior officers, many women or people of color, citing a need to restore a “warrior ethos.”

Trump labeled unrest in Democratic-led cities a “war from within,” deploying thousands of troops to cities like Los Angeles, Portland, and Washington, D.C., as “training grounds.” The Pentagon plans renaming to the Department of War.

Government Shutdown 2025

The U.S. government shut down at midnight, after the Senate failed 55-45 to pass a stopgap spending bill requiring 60 votes.

The shutdown freezes $1.7 trillion in funding, suspending nonessential services like air travel, small business loans, and scientific research. About 750,000 federal civilian workers face furlough, with 150,000 recently accepting buyouts.

The standoff centers on extending Affordable Care Act subsidies and Medicaid funding; 24 million Americans risk higher healthcare costs and 4 million could lose coverage.

Who carries more responsibility for the shutdown over healthcare subsidies?

Big Tech has a playbook: when you're late to a hot market, you buy your way in.

Right now, Apple is staring down a $158B smart home market and they're miles behind Google (who paid $3.2B for Nest) and Amazon (who paid $1.2B for Ring).

With their new smart home products, Apple just fired the starting gun. The multi-billion-dollar question is: who will they buy?

Early investors in Nest and Ring made fortunes. History is repeating itself.

TrumpRx Deal

Pfizer will cut U.S. Medicaid drug prices by up to 85%, averaging 50%, aligning them with prices in other developed countries.

This affects over 70 million Medicaid enrollees and select specialty drugs like Xeljanz. In exchange, Pfizer avoids tariffs for three years and commits $70 billion to expanding U.S. manufacturing.

The TrumpRx website launching in early 2026 will let consumers buy discounted drugs directly, bypassing insurance. U.S. drug prices remain nearly three times higher than abroad.

Pfizer’s stock rose 7% post-announcement, with other drugmakers showing gains. The deal applies only to Medicaid, not Medicare or private insurance.

Trump Withdraws BLS Pick

The White House withdrew E.J. Antoni’s nomination to lead the Bureau of Labor Statistics after bipartisan criticism over his lack of government experience and prior dismissals of BLS data.

Antoni was nominated following the firing of former chief Erika McEntarfer after a weak July jobs report. The BLS faces budget cuts, staff losses, declining survey response rates, and a shutdown that will furlough nearly all employees.

Deputy Commissioner William J. Wiatrowski serves as interim chief. The agency’s credibility and independence are under threat amid political pressure. The White House called Antoni a “brilliant economist” and plans to nominate a replacement requiring Senate confirmation.

Should monthly jobs reports be paused or changed to quarterly given current challenges in data collection?

Is “Normal” Vitamin B12 Actually Enough?

A study of 231 older adults (average age 71) found that lower-but-normal active vitamin B12 (holo-transcobalamin) levels correlate with slower cognitive processing, delayed visual responses, and more white matter brain lesions linked to dementia and stroke.

Average B12 was 414.8 pmol/L, above deficiency cutoff (148 pmol/L), but subtle neurological damage still appeared. Current B12 deficiency guidelines may need revising to focus on active B12 rather than total serum levels.

Older adults, vegetarians, those with gastrointestinal issues, and certain medication users face higher deficiency risk. Oral supplementation (1000 mcg daily) is advised for deficiency without absorption problems; injections are for neurological symptoms or severe anemia. Toxicity is rare.

Sources: SciTechDaily, Medscape.

If you were an older adult with no B12 deficiency symptoms but lower normal B12 levels, would you take daily supplements?

How Rheumatoid Arthritis Starts Years Before Pain

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) begins silently, years before joint pain, with immune activation detectable 3–5 years prior.

Researchers monitored 45 individuals with ACPA antibodies; 16 (36%) developed RA. Before symptoms, blood showed elevated inflammatory proteins and activated B cells and CD4 T cells promoting autoantibody production.

However, 40–70% with ACPA do not develop RA, complicating prediction. Abatacept can delay RA onset by modulating immune responses in high-risk patients.

Understanding early immune changes may enable preemptive treatment to prevent or delay RA, potentially transforming diagnosis and care for millions at risk.

If tests identify you at high risk for RA years before symptoms, would you consider preventive medication?
