Trump Imposes Additional 10% Tariffs on Canada
President Trump raised U.S. tariffs on Canadian imports by 10%, adding to existing rates: 35% on many goods, 50% on metals, and 10% on energy. The increase followed an Ontario ad criticizing U.S. tariffs, quoting Ronald Reagan opposing them.
Ontario paused the ad after Trump’s backlash, but it aired during the World Series, escalating tensions. Canada exports over 75% of its goods to the U.S., with Ontario’s automotive sector heavily impacted. Prime Minister Mark Carney stressed federal responsibility for trade talks; Trump declined meetings at the ASEAN summit.
The Ronald Reagan Foundation acknowledged the ad’s accuracy but criticized selective editing. The Canadian Chamber of Commerce called for diplomacy to resolve the dispute.

SNAP Benefits Freeze
The government shutdown has lasted 25 days, threatening SNAP benefits for 42 million Americans starting November 1. The USDA will not issue SNAP payments next month unless funding is restored.
Over 3.5 million Texans, including 1.7 million children, face lost benefits totaling $614 million. Food banks expect increased demand. Federal workers remain unpaid or furloughed.
Congress has rejected 12 funding bills. Democrats want Affordable Care Act subsidy extensions in reopening talks; Republicans oppose, citing concerns over immigrant healthcare. Some states declared emergencies to support hunger relief. USDA refused to use emergency SNAP funds. If shutdown continues beyond November 5, it will be the longest in U.S. history.

Louvre Jewelry Heist Arrests
Four thieves broke into the Louvre during the day, stealing eight crown jewels valued at $102 million using a crane and power tools, then escaped on motor scooters.
French police arrested several suspects, including two men from Seine-Saint-Denis and one caught at Charles de Gaulle Airport attempting to flee to Algeria. Stolen items include tiaras, necklaces, and earrings from Queen Marie-Amélie, Queen Hortense, and Empress Eugenie. Empress Eugenie’s diamond- and emerald-adorned gold crown was found damaged near the museum.
About 100 investigators are searching for the remaining jewels. The heist exposed security gaps in the historic Louvre, which receives 8.7 million visitors annually. Police praised but offered limited case details.

Opioid-Free Relief
Researchers mapped how the brainstem processes pain from specific body regions using 7-Tesla fMRI on 93 volunteers experiencing heat-induced pain.
They identified two brainstem areas—the periaqueductal grey (PAG) and rostral ventromedial medulla (RVM)—with upper parts responding to facial pain and lower parts to arm or leg pain. Placebo creams reduced pain in 61% of cases, showing pain relief is spatially precise.
The lateral PAG uses cannabinoid-related, not opioid, pathways for pain modulation. This challenges prior beliefs that placebo effects rely predominantly on the opioid system.
The findings offer a blueprint for developing targeted, non-opioid chronic pain treatments acting on specific body areas to improve safety and efficacy.

Cracking Leukemia’s Defenses
Researchers identified two key AML survival mechanisms: Rutgers scientists found AML cells resist venetoclax by raising OPA1 protein, which reshapes mitochondria to block cell death.
Combining venetoclax with OPA1 inhibitors doubled survival in mice, including cases with p53 mutations, and triggered ferroptosis without harming normal cells. Meanwhile, Lund University researchers discovered AML cells evade the immune system via SLAMF6, a surface protein inhibiting T cell attacks.
Blocking SLAMF6 with a new antibody, TNC-1, restored immune response in lab and mouse models. Both therapies are early-stage but target mitochondrial defense and immune evasion, with plans for further development and clinical trials.
