Trump Administration Defends Access to Mifepristone

The Trump administration is defending against a lawsuit from Missouri, Idaho, and Kansas aimed at restricting access to mifepristone, an abortion medication.

The Justice Department argues that the states lack standing and should file in an appropriate venue. Mifepristone has been approved for over 25 years and is used in over 60% of U.S. medication abortions.

Previous challenges to its FDA regulations have been dismissed by the Supreme Court. The states’ objections relate to FDA decisions from 2016, exceeding the statute of limitations.

OpenAI Reverses For-Profit Shift

OpenAI will keep nonprofit control over its for-profit division, following criticism and a lawsuit from co-founder Elon Musk. CEO Sam Altman stated this decision is to maintain the balance between profit and the nonprofit mission.

Initial plans to transition to a public benefit corporation (PBC) aimed at easing capital-raising restrictions. OpenAI sought $40 billion in funding, prompting concerns over its mission.

The decision was influenced by discussions with civic leaders and Attorneys General. Musk’s legal battle continues, with a jury trial set for March 2026, while investors negotiate terms on the restructuring.

Should OpenAI’s structure be fundamentally for-profit to meet market demands?

India Proposes Zero Tariffs

India has proposed zero tariffs on steel, auto components, and pharmaceuticals from the U.S. during trade negotiations, contingent on reciprocal zero tariffs from the U.S.

This initiative aims to finalize a bilateral trade deal by autumn 2025. Ongoing talks follow discussions held in Washington by Indian officials in April 2025.

The U.S. currently imposes a 26% tariff on Indian exports, which was temporarily paused.

If an agreement is reached, India could see a growth rate of 6.5%.

Will a successful trade agreement with India significantly benefit American consumers?

Newark's Communication Breakdown

On April 28, Newark Liberty International Airport experienced a 90-second loss of radar and radio communication, causing over 500 flight delays and at least 200 cancellations.

Average delays reached 1 hour and 32 minutes. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy criticized the outdated air traffic control system, noting both primary and backup communication lines failed.

Staffing shortages of 3,000 controllers exacerbated the situation. United Airlines canceled 35 daily round-trip flights to ease congestion.

The FAA announced plans to improve the aging air traffic control system, highlighting the need for updates to ensure safety and efficiency in U.S. airspace.

Is the communication failure at Newark a sign that the entire air traffic control system is outdated?

Decoding Glioblastoma

Researchers at Weill Cornell Medicine found that the 3D organization of DNA plays a crucial role in glioblastoma, an aggressive brain cancer.

They identified "3D gene hubs" that group cancer-related genes with others not usually linked to the disease. Using CRISPR to silence these hubs reduced tumor-like behavior in glioblastoma cells.

Analysis showed similar 3D hubs in 16 cancer types, mostly arising from epigenetic changes instead of genetic mutations.

This research suggests targeting 3D gene organization could lead to new treatments for glioblastoma and other cancers.

B12 and Pancreatitis

Research shows vitamin B12 significantly reduces the risk and severity of acute pancreatitis (AP), a serious gastrointestinal condition.

Genetic analyses and mouse experiments indicated that higher serum B12 levels correlate with reduced pancreatitis risk.

The study demonstrated vitamin B12 protects acinar cells from necrosis and aids tissue repair through enhanced ATP production, rather than through homocysteine or glutathione pathways.

ATP supplementation in deficient mice further confirmed B12's protective role. These findings suggest vitamin B12 could be a promising therapeutic strategy for managing acute pancreatitis.

How important do you think genetic analyses are in understanding dietary impacts on diseases like pancreatitis?
