Ambush Near the White House
Two West Virginia National Guard soldiers were critically shot near the White House in an ambush outside a subway station.
The attacker, Rahmanullah Lakanwal, a 29-year-old Afghan national admitted through Operation Allies Welcome, fired a revolver before being restrained. Both soldiers were hospitalized; initial reports of their deaths were retracted.
Lakanwal applied for asylum in December 2024, approved in April 2025, with no criminal record. President Trump ordered 500 additional Guard troops to Washington amid existing deployments from multiple states. Immigration processing for Afghan nationals was suspended.
A federal judge delayed enforcement of a halt on Guard law enforcement duties in D.C. while appeals proceed. The motive remains under investigation.

Trump Urges Japan to Tone Down Taiwan Rhetoric
President Trump urged Japanese PM Sanae Takaichi to soften her Taiwan-related remarks after his call with Chinese President Xi Jinping, who emphasized China’s claim over Taiwan and its role in the post-WWII order.
This followed Takaichi’s earlier comments suggesting Japan might join a military response if China attacked Taiwan, which triggered Beijing’s economic retaliation and diplomatic warnings.
Trump’s call aimed to avoid jeopardizing a fragile U.S.-China trade deal requiring China to purchase up to 25 million metric tons of U.S. soybeans annually, though deliveries are delayed.
Japan has since toned down its Taiwan rhetoric. The U.S. balances maintaining alliance ties with Japan while preserving trade progress with China.

The news is loud. Money is quiet.
And this week, the money was screaming.
While the market watched the tech giants, a completely different industry quietly dropped $8.6 million on lobbying in a single week.
That is not normal.
It’s a flare in the dark.
It signals a massive panic over tariffs and packaging laws that most investors haven't priced in yet.
And they aren't alone.
A major labor union just moved $5.7 million to squeeze the airlines.
Meanwhile, the usual heavy hitters in Big Oil and Tech? They went completely silent.
We track these filings every day. We look for the anomalies.
These companies aren't guessing. They are betting millions to protect their margins against threats the public doesn't see yet.
You should probably know what they are afraid of before you make your next trade.
Epstein Victim Privacy
The DOJ requested court approval to release Jeffrey Epstein investigation documents, including warrants and financial records. Judge Richard Berman demanded details on how victim privacy will be protected before unsealing grand jury material.
A new law mandates document release despite opposition from President Trump and DOJ officials. Previously released files exposed at least 28 victims' names, including minors, due to a software error by Epstein’s estate.
Victims’ lawyers offered the DOJ a confidential list of 300+ victims to aid redaction and urged protections against using victims as political tools. Legal conflicts escalated after selective redactions of Epstein emails mentioning Trump, with controversy over partisan handling of victim identities.

Miss Universe Scandal
Thai authorities issued an arrest warrant for Anne Jakrajutatip, co-owner of the Miss Universe Organization, over alleged fraud linked to a 2023 bond sale causing a $930,000 loss.
She resigned from JKN Global Group, which owes $93 million and defaulted on payments in 2023. Mexican businessman Raúl Rocha Cantú, who owns half of Miss Universe rights, faces investigation and arrest warrants for arms, drug, and fuel trafficking.
Miss Universe 2025 winner Fatima Bosch publicly clashed with pageant officials amid reports of judge withdrawals, rigging claims, and illegal online casino promotion probes. The controversies raise uncertainty about the pageant’s future amid ongoing Thai and Mexican investigations.

Plant Compound Boosts Chemotherapy
Forskolin, a natural compound from the Plectranthus plant, slows growth of KMT2A-rearranged Acute Myeloid Leukemia (KMT2A-r AML) cells by activating Protein Phosphatase 2A and reducing MYC, HOXA9, and HOXA10 gene activity.
It increases sensitivity to chemotherapy drug daunorubicin by blocking P-glycoprotein 1, which cancer cells use to expel drugs, allowing higher intracellular daunorubicin levels. This dual action could enable lower chemotherapy doses and reduce side effects.
Researchers say combining forskolin with chemotherapy offers a promising treatment strategy for this aggressive leukemia subtype. The study aims to improve survival rates for AML, currently one of the deadliest cancers.

Monogenic Cause of Early-Onset Mental Illnesses
Mutations in the GRIN2A gene cause early-onset mental illnesses including schizophrenia, mood, and anxiety disorders. A study of 121 individuals found "null" GRIN2A variants sharply increase risk: 23 of 84 null carriers had diagnoses versus 2 of 37 with other variants.
Disorders begin in childhood/adolescence, often without epilepsy or intellectual disability. Finnish registry data showed psychotic disorder risk 87 times higher, mood disorder risk 12 times, and anxiety disorder risk 6 times, all before age 12.
Most null carriers with mental illness had epilepsy, but psychiatric symptoms usually started after epilepsy ended. L-serine, targeting NMDA receptors affected by GRIN2A mutations, improved symptoms in four patients. Genetic testing and NMDA-based treatments are recommended.
