No Deal Moscow
Russian President Putin met with Trump envoys Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff in Moscow for nearly five hours discussing a Ukraine peace deal. No breakthrough occurred, with territorial control of Donbas remaining the main obstacle.
The U.S. plan was trimmed from 28 to 20 points after talks with Ukraine and Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Russia claims control of Pokrovsk; Ukraine denies it. Ukraine’s military cap rose from 600,000 to 800,000 troops after European objections. Putin accused Europe of sabotaging talks, rejecting key U.S. proposals favoring Moscow.
Continued fighting causes 25,000–30,000 monthly casualties. Negotiations will proceed amid deep divisions among Moscow, Kyiv, and European stakeholders.

Tennessee Special Election
Republican Matt Van Epps won Tennessee’s 7th District special election with 53.9%, down from Mark Green’s 20-point 2024 margin; Democrat Aftyn Behn gained 45%. Turnout matched 2022 midterms, unusually high for a special.
Van Epps had Trump and House Speaker Johnson’s support; outside GOP groups spent $7 million versus Democrats’ $3 million. Behn outraised Van Epps $1.2 million to $992,000. The tighter margin raises concerns for Republicans holding a 219-213 House majority ahead of 2026.
Democrats have outperformed GOP in recent specials by about 18 points. Economy and housing were key issues. Upcoming specials in Georgia, Texas, and New Jersey will affect House control dynamics.

When the guys who defined the last twenty years of tech move their chips to a new table, you should probably pay attention.
Our latest report tracks exactly where the "Smart Money" flowed this week.
Inside, we break down:
• The "Alpha" Signal: Why a16z is going all-in on health-tech right now.
• The Deep Tech Play: A legendary hacker (he built lasers that shoot mosquitoes) just launched a fund to commercialize "impossible" science.
• The Trap: A drive-thru robot startup that raised $3.5M but looks like total hype.
Most investors read the news after the trade is already crowded. This report is for people who want the signal before the noise starts.
Trump Halts Immigration Applications from 19 Countries
The Trump administration has halted immigration application processing—including green cards and citizenship—from 19 countries, including Afghanistan, Somalia, Iran, Venezuela, and Haiti, citing security concerns after a National Guard shooting linked to an Afghan asylum recipient.
Over 1.5 million pending asylum applications and 50,000 asylum grants are affected. ICE plans a Minneapolis operation targeting Somali immigrants with final deportation orders amid Homeland Security claims that half of Somali visa applications in Minnesota involve fraud. Minnesota hosts the largest U.S. Somali community, around 40,000 residents.
Many immigration interviews and naturalization ceremonies nationwide have been canceled or delayed. Local officials criticize the policy’s broad impact. DHS emphasizes stricter vetting underlining citizenship as a privilege.

Taiwan Assurance Implementation Act
President Trump signed the Taiwan Assurance Implementation Act requiring the State Department to review and update U.S.-Taiwan official contact guidelines every five years.
Reports from these reviews must be submitted to Congress within 90 days. The bill passed Congress unanimously and aims to deepen bilateral engagement, potentially allowing greater U.S.-Taiwan official interactions. Taiwan’s government supports the law, while China condemns it as a violation of its core interests and warns against encouraging Taiwan independence.
The law builds on earlier relaxations of contact restrictions from 2021 and 2024. This occurs amid rising U.S.-China tensions over Taiwan and ahead of expected Trump-Xi meetings in 2025 and 2026.

Universal Cancer Vaccine
Researchers developed a nanoparticle vaccine that prevented tumors in up to 88% of mice across multiple cancers, including pancreatic, triple-negative breast cancer, and melanoma.
The vaccine activated immune memory, blocking tumor growth and metastasis, particularly stopping melanoma spread to the lungs. In melanoma tests, 80% of vaccinated mice survived 250 days tumor-free, while unvaccinated mice died within 35 days.
The vaccine combines cancer-specific antigens with a dual-ingredient "super adjuvant" lipid nanoparticle, triggering strong T-cell responses across multiple immune pathways. This platform shows potential for broad cancer prevention and treatment. A startup, NanoVax Therapeutics, aims to advance this technology to improve patient outcomes.

Breakthrough Retron-Based Gene Editing
Scientists at the University of Texas developed a retron-based gene-editing method that corrects multiple DNA mutations simultaneously with about 30% efficiency, up from 1.5%.
This technique replaces long faulty DNA segments rather than targeting single mutations, enabling broader treatment coverage and simpler regulatory approval. Researchers demonstrated success in mammalian cells and zebrafish embryos, targeting diseases like scoliosis and cystic fibrosis (CF), which involves over 1,000 CFTR gene mutations affecting 162,000 people globally.
Funded by Emily’s Entourage and the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, efforts focus on CF patient-derived airway cells unresponsive to current therapies. Retrons may also reduce DNA damage in gene editing, improving safety and cost-effectiveness. Further clinical trials are needed.

“When you have a rival cornered and the chance for revenge is sitting there on a silver platter, the common impulse is to eat it up; but the high-minded man pushes the plate away and offers his enemy a chair instead. There is no way to defeat a man so completely as to forgive him when he knows he ought to be hanged—it leaves him with his life, but it takes away all his ammunition.”
